About Swachh Survekshan-2017
Swachh Survekshan-2017 is a survey commissioned by the Ministry of Urban Development during January – February, 2017.
It was aimed at capturing the improvement in sanitation scenario, primarily based on making cities and towns Open Defecation Free and improvement in processing of municipal solid waste.
Criteria and weightages for different components of sanitation related aspects used for the Survey are:
- Solid Waste Management including Door-to-Door collection, Processing and Disposal, ODF status etc: 45% of total 2,000 marks i.e 900 marks
- Citizen feedback : 30% i.e 600 of total marks
- Independent observation : 25% i.e 500 marks
421 assessors of Quality Council of India have physically inspected 17,500 locations in 434 cities and towns. 2,680 residential locations, 2,680 commercial locations and 2,582 commercial and public toilets were inspected in these cities and towns for on the spot third party assessment of ground level assessment of sanitation.
Swachh Survekshan 2017 Report
Swachh Survekshan 2017 Report was released recently. Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) are the top three cleanest cities of the country, as per the results of the Swachh Survekshan, 2017.

Next year, the ambit of Survekshan shall increase to 4041 statutory towns and cities of the country. The methodology of assessment needs to put in place more points for segregation and decentralised treatment.
