Reducing India’s carbon footprint through plantation drives: Is it good enough?

India has been committed to reducing its carbon footprint for which it has made several commitments like the Bonn Challenge and the Nationally Determined Challenge. The preferred approach has been large scale plantation drives. Explain the problems associated with the current approach. Also suggest alternate approaches that can be followed to reduce the carbon footprint sustainably.

India has the policy framework, the political will and financing to endorse landscape restoration. What is needed now is an innovation and imagination to build replicable and scalable models with a participatory approach to achieve the country’s climate goals through landscape restoration.
